It can be interpreted two ways.
1. The kid is wearing a dress because he’s pretending to be pope. His dad thinks he’s crossdressing, but his mom knows better.
2. The kid is crossdressing in reality. His mom protects him, and he later becomes pope. The implication being that popes/clergy are effeminate because they wear things that aren’t pants, which is a non sequitur. I think this one is more likely because the dad wouldn’t have left the family over his kid wanting to be pope.
